Investigation of the Metal Bioremediation Ability of Two Populations of <i>Peganum Harmala</i>

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of zinc exposure (0, 1, 5, 15, 30 mg/L zinc) on biochemical and physiological parameters Peganum harmala seedlings. Two populations (metallicolous non-metallicolous) were compared in Zn tolerance, accumulation, photosynthetic pigments, enzymatic antioxidant activities. Plants treated with at concentrations 0, for 14 days. results showed that increase concentration nutrient solution reduced shoot length, root dry weight, chlorophyll a, b, total chlorophyll, carotenoid both populations; however, accumulation was more pronounced metallicolous (M) than non-metallicolous (NM) ones. In response, activities enzymes such as guaiacol peroxidase, lipoxygenase, superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase enhanced populations. Moreover, it found population P. had a greater capacity adapt oxidative stress caused by population, antioxidative defense might have played an essential role tolerance. Therefore, seemed be suitable candidate accumulation; recommended further investigations carried out explore its metal remediation ability. It is concluded can potential bioremediation contaminated soils.
